Latin: Salvia officinalis
English: sage
German: Salbei

In what areas is the sage plant recommended?

It is helpful and supportive for tonsillitis, pharyngitis, chronic pharyngitis and gingivitis.

I know many people who have suffered from tonsillitis for years. Especially children of school age stay in bed for days with high fever and drop out of school due to tonsillitis. In these cases, mouthwashes with sage are a real help. Sage is also a real protector and preventative against the development of tonsillitis and/or pharyngitis.

A sage mouthwash that you use several times a day for the first few days will make you feel reborn. If you repeat this mouthwash several times a week in the following days, you will protect yourself from tonsillitis and pharyngitis.

The first word of the Latin name sage, "salvia", means to protect, guard and preserve. Salvin, carnosolic acid and cirsimaritin, which are contained in sage, are active substances with antibiotic properties. In particular, salvin and carnosolic acid influence RNA synthesis in bacteria and thus prevent them from multiplying and regenerating. Another important essential oil contained in sage is cineol. Cineol is a cough suppressant. In short, sage is both a natural antibiotic and a natural cough suppressant.

Furthermore, the active substances with antibiotic properties in sage are water-soluble substances. Because of their water-soluble properties, they offer the possibility of brewing them directly in hot water without making alcohol tinctures. Most mouthwashes have to be prepared with some alcohol. Since the active ingredient with natural antibiotic properties contained in many plants does not dissolve in water, they cannot develop any effect when prepared with water. Since the natural antibiotics contained in sage are very soluble in water, they make it possible to prepare them as mouthwash, especially for your children, by simply brewing them in hot water.

The point I want to emphasise here is that there are over thirty known varieties of sage in our country. Most of them are wild. The mouthwash of some wild sage species may not be as effective as desired. Therefore, when buying sage from the market, be careful not to buy wild sage. If you are unsure about this, you can use packaged sage from different manufacturers that is available in some major supermarkets.

Did you know?
Sage has been used as a pesticide throughout history. Since sage is a parasite repellent, parasites and insects cannot approach sage. For this reason, the leaves and stems of sage were scattered as pesticides in areas where vegetables and grains were grown in ancient times and in the centuries that followed.

Tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils)
Inflammation of the tonsils, also called tonsillitis, caused by bacteria and less frequently by viruses, is called tonsillitis. The most common symptom is severe pain when swallowing, mixed with earache. This pain manifests itself in refusal to eat in young children. In addition to pain, high fever, fatigue, headache and vomiting are also common symptoms.

When people with tonsillitis get up in the morning, their bad breath is quite strong. After brushing the teeth, the smell becomes a little lighter and disappears completely after breakfast. Throughout the day, there is no bad breath. This is because the inflammation that occurs during the night is transmitted through the food at breakfast in the morning. However, when you go to sleep at night, the inflammation starts again.
Gargling once every day after cleaning your mouth is a powerful inhibitor against bacteria in the mouth and bad breath. Normally, you should prepare sage mouthwash and keep it away from your sink. The prepared sage mouthwash can be left on the shelf of your sink for three days without spoiling.

In some cases, tonsillitis and/or sore throat can become chronic. For chronic tonsillitis or chronic sore throat, sage is not enough. Read more about the hibiscus plant for chronic tonsillitis or chronic pharyngitis.

Attention
Those suffering from pharyngitis and tonsil problems should avoid cigarettes and acidic drinks (such as cola, lemonade, mineral water) while using the cures. In parallel, care must be taken to clean the teeth and mouth. Make sure to brush your teeth after meals. Make sure to perform the mouth rinses indicated in the applications after brushing your teeth.

At this point I would like to explain a point that parents with school-age children should pay attention to. Childhood pharyngitis is a common condition that is often ignored by parents. Remember that a sore throat, which may seem like a simple situation to you, can have serious consequences and you should definitely consult your doctor.

Acute rheumatic fever (ARA)
Acute rheumatic fever (ARA), ?beta-microbe? This is an inflammatory condition that occurs a few weeks after pharyngitis caused by group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus or scarlet fever, which is also caused by the same microorganism. It is common in school-age children. About four out of every hundred people develop acute rheumatic fever (ARA) after a streptococcal infection. There is no rule that ARA will develop after every pharyngitis. However, because of the risk that ARA can cause severe heart damage, caution is advised with seemingly simple sore throats.

Unlike other organ damage, inflammation of the heart can cause permanent damage. The tissue of the heart, called the endocardium, covers the inside of the heart and the heart valves. As the lesions on the heart valves heal, the heart valves thicken, stick together and shrink. The result is valve stenosis and/or insufficiency. Rheumatic fever is the most common cause of valvular heart disease. Rheumatic heart disease can occur about ten to fifteen years after the disease. Therefore, do not neglect sore throat or throat complaints of your school-going children and let them consult a doctor.

Sage is a tea that has been widely consumed in our country in recent years. However, pregnant women should use sage cautiously during the first three months of their pregnancy. If there is a risk of miscarriage, you should definitely keep your hands off sage. This is because sage leaves contain four substances that increase the risk of miscarriage. The names of these substances are listed in the table below. It is wrong for pregnant women to take medicines and independently choose herbal treatments without consulting their doctor.

Dear reader, the first trimester of pregnancy is very important. Do not use medicines and herbal treatments that you are not familiar with without consulting your doctor. It is a common belief that herbal medicines have no side effects in our country. This view is not correct. Before using unknown and unfamiliar plants, be sure to check with people or organisations who are knowledgeable in this field. Since many plants in Turkey have different names depending on the region, it is often difficult to get the right plant you want or to be sure that the plant you buy is the right plant.

Similarly, beta-bisabolene in thyme and oleanolic acid in rosemary are active ingredients that increase the risk of miscarriage.

Protects against tonsillitis and pharyngitis

A sachet of sage or a teaspoon of fresh sage is brewed in about one glass of water for ten minutes with the mouth closed. It is gargled two to three times a day.
In addition, a tea glass of sage is drunk daily for one month. After the infusion time has elapsed, do not leave the plant in the water, but be sure to strain and separate it. The prepared mouthwash can remain in your bathroom cabinet for forty-eight hours without spoiling.

USE THE RIGHT PLANT!

The most important thing to keep in mind when using all these remedies is: is the shelf life of the plant. The second is that the plant was collected at the right time. The third point is how the plant is dried. Depending on the characteristics of each plant, it should be dried under suitable conditions. Some plants need to be planted in the shade, some in the sun and some in the dark. The most important thing is that the plant you use is absolutely of the right species. If it is not the right kind of plant, the effect of the cure will be considerably reduced.

Note: If your doctor prescribes medication, be sure to use it. Use the application here as a supporter. First, you need to know if you are allergic to the plant you want to use. Get your doctor's opinion on this. Regardless of your complaint, do not try to treat yourself with the information listed here without going to the doctor and getting a diagnosis.
